VIDEO: VolunBeers with HandsOn San Diego
HandsOn San Diego is a nonprofit organization that engages individuals, as well as small and large groups, by connecting them with nonprofit organizations in and around San Diego where they can donate their time and talent for a variety of projects and activities. According to their website, nonprofit organizations benefit because volunteer engagement increases their reach and capacity. And volunteers benefit because they witness first-hand how they are positively impacting the San Diego region.
Multiple times each year, HandsOn San Diego hosts volunteer craft nights at local breweries and wineries, known as VolunBeers, in which volunteers can socialize while making a craft to benefit a local nonprofit organization. Last month, VolunBeers was hosted at Pure Project in Balboa Park. The event benefited Dreams For Change, a nonprofit whose mission is to respond to the needs of communities by creating innovative and cost-effective programs to empower and stabilize the lives of underserved families and individuals.
During the event, volunteers crafted no-sew pillows for community members who take advantage of their Safe Parking Program. The Safe Parking Program provides a safe and secure place for individuals and families to park for the night. They also help people make plans for their futures, whether assisting them with finding permanent housing or helping them with workforce development.
Since the progran’s inception in 2010, they have helped more than 3,500 individuals and families.
