Making Earth Day, Every Day: San Diego EarthFest 2023

On Saturday, April 22nd, thousands of San Dieagans gathered on President’s Lawn in Balboa Park to celebrate our beautiful planet for Earth Day at EarthFest. Observed annually by over a billion people around the world, Earth Day helps raise awareness of things like pollution, deforestation, local watersheds, and other environmental issues.

Earth Day dates back to 1970, when a Wisconsin Senator organized the first demonstration to spread the word about environmental issues. The demonstration was followed by rallies nationwide, leading to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency that same year.

Presented by Vegan Food Popup, San Diego’s Earthfest featured over 100 eco-friendly food, product, and service vendors in addition to animal rescue groups, environmental nonprofits, and conservation groups.

Among many vendors, we spoke with Angela at Balancing Truth, a personal healer who helps people with the integration of truth and by providing healing modalities, ancient remedies, and spiritual tools that balance the physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies. Angela shared, “by purifying and protecting your energy fields, you’ll be more balanced. And being balanced makes you less reactive to certain situations since you won’t be triggered, making you able to live in a place where everybody will get along, they’ll have pure intentions, and darkness will no longer exist.”

The Shore Sanctuary, a local nonprofit, takes in “the misfits and the unwanted,” providing medical attention and loving homes for birds and other animals including pot belly pigs, ostrich, dogs, goats, and more.

The food mall was incredibly busy all day, and featured delicious and healthy vegan options inspired by their meat counter parts: Jackfruit birria tacos and burritos, mushroom tacos, burgers, hot dogs, mac-n-cheese, bbq, stir fry, Ethiopian delicacies, and more.

Barbara Gates from Healthy Kids, Happy Planet, hosted a variety of kid-friendly activities, from story time to coloring, games, and an art show.

What was the highlight? Seeing so many people actively engaged in protecting our planet, and each other. If you weren’t able to check out the event this year, we definitely recommend putting it on your to-do list for 2024!

I grew up in Oregon before moving to San Diego for college and stayed to pursue my love of journalism. I love meeting new people, voluteering at local animal shelters, and trying all the ramen I can find. San Diego is such a beautiful city, full of diversity and culture, and it's my pleasure to explore and share it with you!
